AN END OF A PARTY AS WE KNEW IT

"Anti-war challenge"? That characterization is almost funny. Most of those "grass-roots and Internet activists" called "anti-war" definitely aren't that.
What many termed "anti-war" actually are, however, is on the other side. Which means that a Lieberman primary defeat might well complete the transformation of the Democratic party from one in which national defense could have its backers, to a party dominated by those demanding its members possess no serious position on, or even be outright hostile to, U.S. national defense. Given that dramatic platform alteration, that means that although it may still style itself the "Democratic party", in reality on defense it will no longer really be the party which it had been since World War II.
On that "transformation", and speaking of WWII and its aftermath, today is another August 6. What's that odd spinning noise you hear? It's Harry, in his grave.
In any event, if he does lose on Tuesday, and then finds he is unable to hold his Senate seat as an "independent" in November, I don't think we really need to worry about Joe's future prospects. He'll do fine:
For instance, he might make a terrific pope someday.
