A JOB FOR LIFE (IF HE WANTS IT)?

United States UN Ambassador John Bolton, quoted by CNN (via Crossing the Rubicon), July 23:

..."What Hezbollah has done is kidnap Israeli soldiers and rain rockets and mortar shells on innocent Israeli civilians. What Israel has done in response is act in self-defense. And I don't quite know what the argument about proportionate force means here. Is Israel entitled only to kidnap two Hezbollah operatives and fire a couple of rockets aimlessly into Lebanon?"...

..."The situation is that Israel has lived under the terrorist threat of Hezbollah for years, and these most recent attacks have given it the legitimate right, the same right America would have if we were attacked, to deal with the problem. And that's what they're doing."...

Actually, one might also ask this. To all the "Israel's not engaging in a proportionate response" crowd out there, a related question: Why is it that 1,000 Palestinian prisoners = 1 Israeli soldier?

And here, on July 21, the BBC did see fit to tell us that:

The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah militants has said his group will only give up two captured Israeli soldiers in a prisoner exchange....

But for some reason omitted the number of Hezbollah prisoners Nasrallah wishes to be released "in exchange". It is hard to get an exact figure. But no worries, as the BBC had told us on July 12 that:

...Hezbollah captured three Israeli soldiers in 2000. They died during the operation, but four years later, the group was able to exchange their bodies for 430 Palestinians and Lebanese held in Israeli jails...

So the bodies of 3 murdered Israelis were worth 430 live Palestinians and Lebanese? Doesn't sound particularly "proportionate" such an "exchange". Does it?

Bolton politely also reminded a certain UN "human rights" official about the nature of her role:

...Bolton bristled at last week's suggestion from Louise Arbour, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, that Israeli leaders could be charged with war crimes.

"You know, in America, prosecutors are not supposed to threaten people in public based on press reports," said Bolton, a graduate of Yale Law School. "I would just say as one lawyer to another, that -- to Mrs. Arbour, that she should consider her professional ethics and responsibilities very carefully here before threatening criminal charges based on press accounts."...

His willingness to speak clearly and hold UN grandees to account, is EXACTLY why Bolton should be confirmed not just for the rest of the Bush administration, but as US UN "ambassador for life". (Should he be insane enough to desire that sort of tenure, that is.)

I've got graduate degrees in political science and in history, and I've taught in an American university. More importantly, I like music, books, travel, and find skiing a bit of a challenge -- however, as my wife LOVES to ski (and can ski very well!), of course I LOVE to ski, too. ;-) And, overall, I'm probably a lot like yourself: Nobody special, just someone who looks at what's reported and too often thinks, "Hmm . . . that doesn't sound quite right." And then I bash a keyboard.
