  WHAT COMPETITION?

What exactly are the rules to this game? Are they made up as the official goes along? It seems so.

Apparently, one gets a "10" for presentation when diving:

...Francesco Totti came off the bench to score an injury-time penalty which put 10-man Italy into the quarter-finals and break Australia's hearts.

With the clock ticking down Fabio Grosso marauded down the left flank and worked his way into the box, before he was hauled down by Lucas Neill...

What supposed sporting event was the BBC watching? He wasn't "hauled down". He dove. And blatantly.

This World Cup is increasingly a joke due to the officiating. Like I worried several days ago might become the case, FIFA is presiding over another version of Olympic figure skating. Indeed consider also the corruption scandal currently enveloping the Italian domestic league:

...BBC News' Rome correspondent Christian Fraser said: "It [June 23] was a bittersweet day here. Within hours of Italy making it into the last 16, the country's football federation announced which teams would be involved in the hearings next week.

"The announcement did not come out until the Stock Exchange in Milan closed, where two of the four clubs involved, Juventus and Lazio, are listed.

"If any of these teams are found guilty then they could be relegated and will not take part in the European club competitions next season."...

Switzerland v. Ukraine is next. So, who's supposed to win that one? Or, in other words, as a famous talk show host has said many times, "This is only an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please, no wagering."

©? Copyright? Well, myself, I guess. But there is nothing too dramatic here. I was born in 1965. I've got graduate degrees in political science and in history, and I've taught in an American university. More importantly, I like music, books, travel, and find skiing a bit of a challenge -- however, as my wife LOVES to ski (and can ski very well!), of course I LOVE to ski, too. ;-) And, overall, I'm probably a lot like yourself: Nobody special, just someone who looks at what's reported and too often thinks, "Hmm . . . that doesn't sound quite right." And then I bash a keyboard.

"Do not let us be hair splitters. Let us not ask ourselves whether the Americas should begin to defend themselves after the first attack, or the fifth attack, or the tenth attack, or the twentieth attack. The time for active defense is now." (President Franklin Roosevelt, radio address . . . September 11, 1941.)
