  PEACEFUL THREATENERS

Today, we hear much of those who threaten . . . but peacefully.

The Times:

A planned visit by Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, to a mosque in Jack Straw’s constituency in the North West of England has been cancelled because of threats from anti-war protesters to invade the building...

"Anti-war". Of course.

CNN:

American hostage Jill Carroll, a freelance journalist released Thursday in Iraq after nearly three months in captivity, said she was "treated very well" while she was held.

"They never said they would hit me. They never threatened me in any way," she said in a TV interview after her release...

So they just took her hostage after killing her companion, but "never threatened" her.

UPDATE: April 2: Of course they threatened her. Now that she is free to talk, we are hearing more. Reuters:

Describing her captivity in Iraq as horrific, freed American hostage Jill Carroll disavowed on Saturday critical statements she made about the United States, saying she had been forced to make a propaganda video.

In the video made before her release and posted on a jihadist Web site that also showed beheadings and attacks on American forces, Carroll denounced the U.S. presence in Iraq and praised the militants fighting American forces there.

"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not," she said in a statement read in Boston by Richard Bergenheim, editor of The Christian Science Monitor, the Boston-based employer of the 28-year-old journalist...

...In her statement on Saturday, she said she been threatened repeatedly and described her captors as "criminals at best." She also recanted statements she made in an interview given to the Iraqi Islamic Party shortly after her release.

"The party had promised me the interview would never be aired on television, and broke their word. At any rate, fearing retribution from my captors, I did not speak freely. Out of fear I said I wasn't threatened," she said.

"In fact, I was threatened many times."...

Question: We all count on CNN and others to provide some context. That's what "news" is supposed to do. But, as usual, with the above, we got none -- just a rehash of what she "said". It's disgraceful.

So, those kidnappers weren't so "peaceful" after all. There's a shock.

The A.P.:

Prosecutors had asked for the maximum — a life sentence — for Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen who was born to a Jordanian father and raised in Falls Church, Va...

...But U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee said 30 years was sufficient punishment...

...Ali was convicted in November of conspiracy to assassinate the president, conspiracy to hijack aircraft and providing support to Al Qaeda, among other crimes...

Now, now, we all know that "conspiracy" in this case is just another word for "threaten". And while Ali had said in his confession that he. . .

..."was interested in jihad and the idea of mujaheedin" because of "my hatred of the United States for support of Israel against the Palestinian people."...

. . . that's not necessarily unpeaceful of him; in fact, it might even be considered a positive. The court obviously misunderstood the context. For one thing, the A.P. has already shared with us the definition of "jihad":

...[It] generally refers to the Islamic concept of the struggle to do good...

©? Copyright? Well, myself, I guess. But there is nothing too dramatic here. I was born in 1965. I've got graduate degrees in political science and in history, and I've taught in an American university. More importantly, I like music, books, travel, and find skiing a bit of a challenge -- however, as my wife LOVES to ski (and can ski very well!), of course I LOVE to ski, too. ;-) And, overall, I'm probably a lot like yourself: Nobody special, just someone who looks at what's reported and too often thinks, "Hmm . . . that doesn't sound quite right." And then I bash a keyboard.

Where have you gone, F.D.R.?

"Do not let us be hair splitters. Let us not ask ourselves whether the Americas should begin to defend themselves after the first attack, or the fifth attack, or the tenth attack, or the twentieth attack. The time for active defense is now." (President Franklin Roosevelt, radio address . . . September 11, 1941.)
