THE REASON FOR "THE ASSAULT"
An A.P. photo caption (the subject's photo isn't worth reproducing; simply put, Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil" comes to mind):
"The assault"? Apparently, the A.P defines that term very differently than the rest of us, for whom the likes of D-Day constitutes an "assault" in a military sense. In contrast, the A.P. obviously feels invading an Olympic village and killing unarmed people is also a military operation. But then again, how dare we judge? We aren't "the essential global news network", of course.
That A.P. nonsense aside, re-read the next point. Just what was the "assaulters' " main gripe that led to their having hatched their "assault" plan while suffering acute oppression in a Roman cafe?: Palestinians didn't have an Olympic team.
Well, that rationale certainly places their "assault" into the same class as the likes of the Polish Home Army uprising against the Germans in mid-1944. We know exacting revenge for the cancellation of that year's Olympics was similarly the Poles' biggest concern. Mohammed Oudeh, the key planner of the assault on the 1972 Munich Olympics that left 11 Israeli athletes dead, recounts in an interview with The Associated Press in a Damascus hospital on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, how he and other PLO leaders, angry their people were denied an Olympic slot, dreamed up the attack while sitting in a Rome sidewalk cafe. Oudeh, better known by his code name Abu Daoud, said he does not regret the attack and insisted Israel must make concessions if it wants peace.
