  THE LAWYERING COMMENCES

The Times:

THE lawyer representing Hussain Osman, the London bomb suspect, said that he had denied that the failed attacks on July 21 had anything to do with the bombings a fortnight earlier.

Antonietta Sonnessa said last night: “My client says his action was purely demonstrative. In fact, all four attempts did not result in any injury or damage at all. Moreover, he maintains that he was nothing to do with the events of July 7.

“He has justified his actions as a form of protest against the fact that civilians are suffering in wars at the present time. He has taken part in many peace marches and has never had any contact whatsoever with any terrorist organisation,” she continued.

“He is not at all a violent person and made sure he would not cause any damage, injuries or deaths. There wasn’t a very clearly defined plan, the whole thing was set the day before, in a meeting with this group of friends.”...

Of course, of course.

I was wrong the other day. The lawyering has taken off first not in Britain, but in Italy.

The A.P.:

Court-appointed lawyer Antonietta Sonnessa arrives at Rome's Regina Coeli prison where British-Ethiopian citizen Osman Hussain is being held, Saturday, July 30, 2005. After investigators grilled Osman Hussain, a suspect accused of trying to attack the Shepherd's Bush station in west London on July 21, and captured in Rome on Friday, magistrates were holding an initial extradition hearing at the Rome prison for the suspect in the failed July 21 bombings in London, officials and lawyers said.

Court-appointed lawyer Antonietta Sonnessa arrives at Rome's Regina Coeli prison where British-Ethiopian citizen Osman Hussain is being held, Saturday, July 30, 2005. After investigators grilled Osman Hussain, a suspect accused of trying to attack the Shepherd's Bush tube station in west London on July 21, and captured in Rome on Friday, magistrates were holding an initial extradition hearing at the Rome prison for the suspect in the failed July 21 bombings in London, officials and lawyers said.

AFP:

Court-appointed lawyer Antonietta Sonnessa leaves Rome's Regina Coeli prison where British-Ethiopian citizen Osman Hussain -- also known as Hamdi Issac is being held. British police deployed in large numbers in London, maintaining a high alert as they hunted for the masterminds behind two waves of terror attacks and awaited news of a bid to extradite a suspected bomber from Rome.

Please forgive one moment of levity in this horrific situation: That is an Italian court-appointed lawyer?

Moving along. Relatedly, Sky reports on why there had been some confusion over his name and original nationality. Can you imagine it? Shockingly, he lied:

...Osman had falsified his name and nationality to enter Britain.

Ethiopian-born Hamdi Issac changed his name to Hussain Osman and said he was a Somali when he arrived in London to make his request for political asylum.

The name confusion in particular is not restricted just to The Times, the A.P. and AFP. I've seen him referred to variously as Osman Hussain and as Hussain Osman . . . and by one source even, I believe, as Carmen Montenegro. However, it appears he is actually neither Hussain Osman, Osman Hussain or Carmen Montenegro, but Hamdi Issac. Given that final name appears to have been his last actual legal name, maybe the media ought to settle on terming him that?

BBC Burmese seems to have it about right:

...There's been a preliminary extradition hearing in Italy as Britain seeks the return of a key suspect in this month's London bombings.

He was arrested in Rome on Friday. The British authorities are pursuing the man, Hamdi Isaac, under a European arrest warrant aimed at streamlining extradition...

Aside from the photo caption, not an Osman or an Hussain in sight.

But is it "Issac" or "Isaac"?

Meanwhile, Sky reports also:

Police are still on high alert in London amid fears that a third terrorist cell could be plotting another strike on the capital.

Thousands of officers are on the streets and guarding Tube and overland rail stations as the huge security operation continues.

The latest fears come despite all four suspected would-be bombers from July 21 being in custody...

And the following was said so straightforwardly that one has to believe he will shortly find himself demoted or even fired for daring to speaketh thus:

...British Transport Police have been targeting specific ethnic groups for "intelligence-led" stop-and-searches as part of their heightened security measures.

BTP Chief Constable Ian Johnston said his officers would not "waste time searching old white ladies". . .

By the way, we will also soon be hearing how Britain needs to be "extra careful" about its anti-terror methods, and it's obvious why:

Images like that one of these men "demeaned" while being captured will certainly lead to further "alienation" of Muslim youth. As a result, more terror attacks are likely overall, owing to the fact that they will undoubtedly "arouse" still more "anger and bitterness" in "the Muslim world". In targeting them unfairly, we will reap the whirlwind eventually: Where are the myriad of photos we all know exist of hands in the air, clothing-less "old white lady" jihadists?

I've got graduate degrees in political science and in history, and I've taught in an American university. More importantly, I like music, books, travel, and find skiing a bit of a challenge -- however, as my wife LOVES to ski (and can ski very well!), of course I LOVE to ski, too. ;-) And, overall, I'm probably a lot like yourself: Nobody special, just someone who looks at what's reported and too often thinks, "Hmm . . . that doesn't sound quite right." And then I bash a keyboard.
