ANOTHER CUTTING EDGE DICTATORSHIP

I'm no expert, but I have to believe that if THIS T-55 is one of Syria's mainstay battle tanks -- a tank first produced by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s and 1960s, and was obsolescent by 1991, when Saddam fielded them in the FIRST Gulf War -- Syria is in even worse shape than we had imagined. About what it's best for by now is indeed intimidating crowds of unarmed democracy-demanding Lebanese young women and men. For if numbers of these T-55s ran into, say, U.S. 1st Armored Division, those Syrian tanks would all be toast quicker than the doomed Syrian tankers inside could cry out "Assad!"

A Syrian T-55 Soviet made tank is positioned in the Bekaa valley near Masnaa, eastern Lebanon, Monday, April 11, 2005. Syria has undertaken to withdraw its remaining intelligence agents and 8,000 troops from Lebanon by April 30, a pullout that the United States and the U.N. secretary general have insisted on.
